San Juan Skyway Scenic Drive.......Wednesday 16th Oct

We are now in Cortez, Colorado, elevation 6191 ft and winter has arrived a month early !!!
It's nice during the day but below freezing at night....not the sort of camping we had planned, we'll just have to keep up the inner warmth !
The National Parks of Colorado are still closed so we take ourselves off on The  San Juan Skyway Scenic Drive.....this is a 242 mile loop drive up into the mountains......it was very scenic, flat ranch land until  Durango and then a slow wind up through switchbacks to the Coal Bank Pass Summit...10.660 ft......
Our boy at one of the many viewpoints........
One thing about travelling around like this is the folks you meet on the way.....at one of the viewpoints we met a family from Indiana and got talking about the covered bridges that we had seen on our Big Road Trip 2010.....
Our turn around point, Silverton, a quaint classic "western" town and 96 miles into our drive........after a call into the visitors centre and discussing the rest of the loop road we decide to return the way we came, we are in no rush but it would be at least another 4 hour drive to do the whole loop albeit scenic...
Main street Silverton.....
The Durango/Silverton narrow gauge steam train and yes it's coming down the street.....it's a scenic rail journey which we did think about doing but it is very expensive....

Hey Dave, you probably know this (we're sure Mr Bloor does !!)  but an educational for me I thought a prairie dog was a dog but no it's a burrowing rodent, similar facial appearance to a squirrel/chipmunk....
We've had a good day and great news this evening that the government shutdown is over, well for the moment and the National Parks will re-open tomorrow.......

  1. Hi Sue & Michael.
In my best Jim impersonation "Actually I did know what a prairie dog was".
All looks great I love the sight of the train coming down the street. Reminds me of childhood watching Casey Jones, that shows my age.
Good to hear that the shut down is over.
Just a thought what's happened to the Song of the day spot.?
Keep taking the inner warmth to keep the nights snug.
    Cheers,
    Ann & Dave

  2. Hi Ann and Dave
Well done re the prairie dog, you're one up on me....
Funny you should mention the song for the day I was only thinking about that yesterday, we are of course still enjoying listening to Willie's Roadhouse on Sirius XM Radio...and spookily today we have a song....just as we were leaving Gallup New Mexico on Route 66, Dallas Wayne (you have to love that name) the DJ played I Get My Kicks On Route 66......and more to the point Gallup, New Mexico is in a line from the song !!! We shall be singing this for a while now as we are following part of Historic Route 66....not much of it left now, the longest stretch is 128 miles, the rest in under the i-40 interstate...
We have also changed plans and are heading west as it is too cold overnight for Yorkieman even with the inner warmth...more blog entires soon...
Great to hear from you, keep the comments coming we love them...
