Fascinating Canyonlands National Park.......13th October

We visited the northern area of Canyonlands NP, The Island in the Sky.   Even the 32 mile drive from our campsite at Moab was through stunning scenery.....our first viewpoint when in the park was at Mesa Arch and easy 1/4 mile walk to the arch....
The Island in the Sky is basically a mesa, 5,920 ft elevation with stunning views down into the many canyons...
Several stops at viewpoints on the 14 mile drive to The Grand View Point.....
At Grand View Point we took the 2 mile rim walk around the cliff edge......great panoramic views....
The Green River......

Our last stop of the day at the fascinating Upheaval Dome.....
Upheaval Dome is a mystery, the rock layers are fractured and tilted, forming  a circular depression more than 2 miles wide.....scientists still debate what forces disrupted these once orderly rock layers, the favoured explanation is a meteorite strike......
The 2 mile strenuous hike has 2 overlooks...this is part of the trail.....
Another view from the second viewpoint of this amazing phenomenon....
And more of the trail......

Shafer Trail Road taken from the overlook...... originally used by ranchers to drive cattle into the canyon it was upgraded during the uranium boom to haul ore from the canyon....no we didn't take this route !!
Again we've had a great day....it was windy with a lot of strong gusts so we are feeling rather weather beaten but happy....

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
You two must be super fit with all the hikes you are doing! great pics giving us a real flavor for your adventures. When the ranchers drove the cattle into the canyon what did the cattle eat? Keep taking the inner warmth
Saturday morning here and for once the weather is promising with blue sky and dry. You have made us feel guilty so we are going for a walk in the forest to burn our breakfast off
    Cheers,

  2. Wow, stunning! Beginning to see why you favour the US, there is just so much to see in one country. You must both now be as slim as racing snakes with all the activity - hope you aren't spoiling it all by drinking!!!! Take care
